SVATA - now available for download!

'Svata'
is based on an ancient Transylvanian
gypsy folktale about the invention of
music. In this story, the devil invents
a musical instrument to woo a lost soul. He trades it for not only her
soul, but those of her father, mother,
and four sisters with which the
instrument was constructed. Like a
siren, the instrument enables the young
girl to keep a lover under a spell.
Greedy and shortsighted, the devil
collects on both of their souls, and
leaves the banjo behind.
Years later, a wandering gypsy steps on
a nail in the woods and uncovers the
banjo under the leaves. As the home had
long since rotted away, the banjo lay in
remarkable condition because it had been
made not of wood, but from the human
bones of the young girl's family.
Fascinated, the gypsy teaches himself to
play it, and as the last line of the
song goes, "Now he plays in the town and
all laugh and cry at his command... yeah
they laugh and cry at his command."

NEW PRESS FROM THE TRIBUNE!
You have to wake
up pretty early in the morning — and get
pretty creative — to classify a band
such as The Hipnecks, which sprinkles
dashes of mainstream country flair,
jam-band exuberance and bluegrass
virtuosity through out its Southern-rock
sound. So the band has embraced a term,
borrowed from the press and kitchens of
the Deep South, to describe its sonics —
“jambalya.” With the group’s soaring,
weathered harmonies, percussive
backwoods stomps and vibrant, versatile
string-band riffs, The Hipnecks —
multi-instrumentalist Pat Kay, guitarist
Zach Harrison, keyboardist Wes Wingate,
bassist Bryan Kay and drummer Danny
Carroll — often come across like musical
cousins to another set of Missouri
high-fliers: Ha Ha Tonka...
